Choosing the right knee pad

Our customers often ask us how they should choose the right kneepad for their child? I am trying to give you some guidance with this blogpost.

First and foremost, before ordering the kneepad, make sure you check with your doctor first, his/her word should be considered the deciding one in this regard too! All the more so if the clubfoot is accompanied by some other problem (hyper- or hypotonia, other hips related issues, etc). This product is not a medical device.

Make sure you measure the distance between the two knees of your baby. In case of small ones the legs are normally pulled up (their knees are bent, they don’t even straighten them fully), thus you should do the measurement while in this position. For slightly bigger children when they start sitting with straightened legs, you should measure like that, while also with he knees bent.

It’s important that the kneepad should not push the knees outward in either of the positions, because long term this could cause other (hips) related problems. Instead the pad should be a little bit smaller, since the goal is to stop the knees falling on each other, rather than forcing them outward.

Regarding the shape of the kneepad, we have 2 shapes in our webshop: cone and square. This choice is up to individual preference.

Finally let me share a small personal advice: The sooner you start using the kneepad, the earlier your baby will get used to it. When Vili was small there was no such accessory available yet. By the time we came up with the idea and design to keep the knees from falling in he was too old to easily adapt to it and didn’t like it…

New product! – Legwarmer

Dear Bracers!

Introducing a new product today, specifically to help during the plaster cast period. It’s the legwarmer!

This product can be useful in various ways, be it winter or summer when your baby goes through the casting period.
The surface of the plaster cast can be rough, it gets stuck in the baby’s clothes and can even rub against the top of the leg. I personally didn’t like the texture of the cast at all not to mention that it didn’t look too nice either.
The diaper contents aren’t too kind on the cast either, the leg warmer can be useful in this regard too (up to a point at least ).
We used Vili’s cast as a sample, so the size should be good, it will not be too loose and will not slide.
Last but not least: the style. it’s an awesome accessory for girls to complement a light summer set, for boys it’s cool with shorts too.

Attention! – knee pad cover

One of our kind customers sent us an inquiry if she could order an extra cover for the knee pad she purchased earlier.

It’s a completely valid question since if you use the knee pad regularly you also want it to be available while the cover has not dried yet after doing the laundry. Also you can have several covers to match you baby’s clothes.

How to choose vertical crib liner

A few weeks ago I got a few questions on our vertical crib liner, so I thought I would share it with you all as it could be useful for others too.

1 of the questions was about the thickness: can we use something thicker than the current 1.5cm vlies for padding?
We have a technical limitation here, the sewing machine available to us unfortunately cannot handle anything thicker than this. As you know on the vlies material we still need to put on the cotton canvas and the minky fabric too, then we also add the velco-straps, so all these together make it too much for the machine.
We also thought about using regular foam, however that one cannot be sewn in between the fabrics (wouldn’t look pretty either) and as a result after you put it in the washing machine the foam would get all twisted.

The other question was about the number of crib liners needed: how many pcs are needed if you want to cover all sides of the crib?
Vili’s crib is 70x140cms, it would need 26 pcs if we wanted to cover all four sides fully.

I told you a few things about what Bracers is about earlier. You know about this blog, which will be a core part of the site, where we will post about clubfoot topics from our own perspective, but will also include bits from professional sources too. Apart from this there will be regular posts dedicated to different experts.

So what about our products though?

Our basic idea was to make life in boots&braces a bit more fun, whoever said clubfoot babies can’t be trendy? We did a lot of research in this area, but apart from a few sites (mostly from the US) there weren’t many options. This was the perfect inspiration to think about what accessories we could create for babies in braces – ‘bracers’.

Two of the main products are therefore the boot covers and the bar covers. We thought it was a great idea to make this available to babies here in Hungary too (or Europe for that matter). However after giving it some more thought we realised there would be other practical benefits of these covers too. For example depending on the right material it can keep the little feet warm, it can even stop/dampen some of the noises that are made when their boots hit the side of their cribs or it could also prevent them taking off their shoes (the covers have snaps on the backside, so it’s not easily accessible for their little hands). The bar cover can also potentially help with the noises in the crib, but could also prevent injuries, since the baby could hit him/herself (or others) with the bar accidentally. I think you all know what I’m talking about… Apart from these, the two covers can be combined with their clothes as needed.

We would like our products to reach as many babies as possible, so we designed them to fit on two different sized boots, this way you don’t have to buy a new one every time, but you can keep the same while going one size up! Our bar covers are available in three different sizes, based on the Iowa bar sizes. The boot covers are made of 2 layer cotton canvas, the bar covers are 2 sided (cotton canvas and soft minky), both have extra options available.

I hope the previous post on products got you interested and you would like to see even more. This will be a long post as well, sorry, it’s just my enthusiasm, I can’t help it.

We thought about the boot covers a bit more and figured that it could be nice for the small babies who have to wear bebax shoes for a while. These covers are designed slightly differently than the ones for the Iowa boots and we are able to offer just 1 piece, so you don’t need to buy a pair if your baby has to wear bebax only on 1 foot.

One of our favourite products is the knee pad, which is available in 2 forms: 1 sort of cone shaped and the other 1 is more like a brick. This product will have 2 layers to allow you to wash it (inside is the stuffing material, outside the removable coloured canvas). This is specifically recommended to wear during sleep, because the baby’s knees are supported by it. Please note that this is not a medical product.

To be able to carry all this stuff with you wherever you go, we offer a 2 layer cotton canvas bag in our webshop as well. It is big enough to fit the largest size Iowa bar and boots in assembled state. It also has many pockets to store other small things too.

During the nights Vili was constantly knocking on the bars in his crib when he was trying to fall asleep, we tried to dampen those sounds by putting pillows between the crib liner and the bars, but it wasn’t a total success as the pillows would come out of their place (sometimes by accident, but other times he was consciously removing them himself ). That’s why we created our vertical crib/bar liners with extra height and thickness. Thanks to its design it will stay in place and will dampen the knocks. It’s also adjustable so it will fit on most type of bars.

And last a product which is not made by us, but it took quite a while to find it. In the beginning we had a challenging time to find the right type of socks for the boots, since it had to be almost knee high, comfortable and not too thick and the material was also important. It was difficult to find socks that meet all these criteria, especially in such small sizes while still not costing a fortune… That’s what we tried to cover with our socks selection, we hope you will like it too!
