Hungarian Folk-tale Day – Tales for clubfoot cuties

September 30th is the Hungarian Folk-tale Day (birthday of Elek Benedek, a famous Hungarian storyteller).

How we found out

Being pregnant was a peaceful and happy period in my mind, it was like that with Vencel for sure. With Vili this turned out to be a bit different…or did it?

My husband was abroad for a short time due to his work at the time of the 20-week ultrasound examination. He was there at all the examinations before and after this one, but life had other plans for us.

So we went with Vencel just the two of us for this examination, on a nice and happy summer day. I was completely unsuspecting since up until this point everything was just fine, why would it be any different today? When the doctor doing the ultrasound mentioned the potential clubfoot possibility I couldn’t even freak out. Vencel was sitting next to me, he understood none of this and I couldn’t panic for his sake. I didn’t learn too much from this doctor, but that is normal, he is doing the examination, he is not supposed to do any diagnosis, it’s the responsibility of the specialist’s to do that. However back then I was very upset that I was left there alone with my doubts, I couldn’t believe this was how they should be handling such things. I didn’t know what to make of this, didn’t know what clubfoot meant for the future of my baby and my family.

After the ultrasound I called Viktor on the phone and shared the news calmly of course since Vencel was sitting there next to me and I didn’t want to scare him. My poor husband wasn’t any better off, he was a few thousand kilometers away from us. I sent him some of the ultrasound videos in the evening so he could see the situation for himself. It was so strange, like it wasn’t even happening to us. Funnily enough when I called my mother about the news I was the one telling her that there is nothing to worry about, there is good treatment available for clubfoot and everything will be alright. Everything will be alright? I couldn’t be certain…

I started searching the internet for clubfoot of course, I wished many times that I shouldn’t have done so… The photos I found were really scary for me….being 20 weeks pregnant, that wasn’t what I needed. However luckily I stumbled upon the Hungarian Clubfoot parent’s group, where I started reading the stories of others. I posted our introduction and I became part of this wonderful community and our story started…

If you are one of those who just found out that you will have a clubfoot baby, I recommend checking out these videos made specifically for clubfoot parents.

It is absolutely vital to have a supportive community during the time of pregnancy, so I strongly suggest to join such a parent support group. I will share a few of such groups below.

Informational videos for parents

While browsing the internet we can come across a lot of photos and videos related to clubfoot, however most of these look pretty scary at first sight. Pictures and videos of surgeries, or of people living with untreated clubfoot. Let’s admit, you don’t really want to look any further after things like this…

At least I felt exactly like this when I was pregnant with Vili. I was curious and worried, but also afraid. I was struggling to accept that this is happening to us and such images really scared me. However this was just the initial reaction. Afterwards I made a conscious change in approach and decided to look for the solution and focus only on that.

I always have to mention those parents who find out about clubfoot at birth (whatever the reason), for them this whole situation can be even scarier.

Luckily there are a few really helpful animated videos on the internet specifically targeted at parents, unfortunately these are only available in English.

I’d like to share a not exhaustive list with you:

What Bracers can offer you?

In the previous blog post we gave you a short intro on who we are and why we started Bracers and our closed Facebook group, but I guess it’s a much more exciting question what Bracers can actually offer you!

Bracers is not just about the products, but about solutions to different problems, continuous learning, a shared destiny, it is about you and us. That’s how our motto became: ‘special products, designed for special needs’.

As parents we try to solve the problems we face during the treatment mostly with DIY methods. I’m not saying that we have a solution for everything (we can’t solve third world hunger), nor did we experience all of these ourselves. There are common problems and questions though, which most clubfoot parents come across at some point. These are the ones we would like to help you out with, based on our own experiences. That’s why the blog will be an essential part of our webpage where we will try to provide answers or at least a little guidance on various questions.

There are topics however, on which we as parents are not competent in nor do we try to appear that way (would be highly irresponsible anyhow). So what we will do instead is ask experts! They will share credible information with you. Their identity shall remain a secret for now, but I promise you we will have recurring content from them.

We will be working hard to realise our ideas, we still have plenty of them in our bags.

How it began…

Did you ever think that you would be browsing a webpage selling clubfoot accessories? Especially it being based in Hungary? I thought not. To be honest a few months ago, we didn’t think it would be possible either!

We have been living with the boots and the bar for 2 years when we started realising how many times we have come across situations which we tried to solve ourselves with varying degrees of success.
So after months of research, browsing and learning we decided to do something about it.

However this proved to be a complex challenge. We were thinking of creating and selling products which didn’t exist before or were only available (more-or-less aligned to what we were thinking of) in the USA, far away from us.

That’s when we got in touch with Eva, an open-minded and creative seamstress. She helped us put our ideas into reality and create useful and practical products. She learned a lot about clubfoot, while we got a bit of insight into cutting and sewing.

Us being on a tight budget means we try to do everything that we can ourselves, this includes our webpage and webshop too. We know it lacks a few things here and there, so please forgive us if there will be some issues along the way.

Our aim is to make the first few years of the treatment a little bit easier for you, but it’s not just about our products, hopefully our blogposts will also turn out to be helpful.

To be honest this webpage is really a dream come true for us and we really hope that you will get to like it too!

Finding out about clubfoot at birth

Although clubfoot can be detected during a prenatal ultrasound (as early as the 18th week), there are cases when it’s not revealed during the prenatal examinations.

In such cases the parents will only realise that their baby has clubfoot when they are born.

I wrote about our story earlier here, we are in the group of parents who found out already at the week 18 prenatal ultrasound that our baby will be arriving with clubfoot. This gave us an opportunity to get prepared both emotionally and from a treatment perspective as well. Looking back I really do think we were lucky to learn about it in advance, but of course at that time we didn’t feel that way, we were also shocked by the news.

Imagine how much more difficult it is for those who find out only at birth. They have to be very clear headed and cool at such an emotional moment to handle this situation.

If they are lucky the doctors around them will direct them to the right place, but still with the best of intentions it might happen that the orthopedist they visit doesn’t have the necessary experience or knowledge about clubfoot treatment. It’s always important for the baby to get the best possible treatment, even more so if it’s a complex clubfoot case (atypical clubfoot).

So what happens if you only find out about it at birth? The good news is that it’s not too late yet, nothing is lost. Treatment usually begins when the baby is a few weeks old already. During the first couple of weeks the most important is that the baby can get used to its new surroundings in a calm and safe environment.

During this period the parents have an opportunity to get some much needed information about clubfoot and to make the necessary decisions. The most important being who their doctor will be and in which hospital. You may find more about choosing the doctor at this link.

It’s really important that the parents find a supportive and helping environment, so the role of the support groups is key (not only at the start, but throughout the whole treatment). We highly encourage all parents to join such a group! You may find some links below!
